Sasha Regan’s Award winning unique all male version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic operetta will be at Hackney Empire from Wednesday 26 September to Sunday 30 September 2012 prior to a seven week Australian tour.

This follows sold out seasons at the Union Theatre in 2009, Wilton’s Music Hall in 2010 and UK tour. The Pirates of Penzance (1879) was an instant hit and is one of the most popular operettas by W.S Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan.

The story concerns Frederic, who, on reaching 21, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tenderhearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and they fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on February 29, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship states that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Neal Moors is the Major General, Alan Richardson is Mabel, Nic Gibney is the Pirate King, Matthew Gent plays Frederick. Other cast include Joseph Houston, Stewart Charlesworth, Lee Greenaway, Adam Vaughan, Michael Burgen, Dale Page, and Chris Theo Cook.

It is directed by Sasha Regan, with choreography by Lizzi Gee, musical supervisor Michael England, with design by Robyn Wilson-Owen, and lighting by Steve Miller. This is a Regan De Wynter Production.

Sasha Regan founded The Union Theatre in 1998. Her directing credits include ‘Iolanthe’ (Critics Choice & Time Out's top 10 musicals of 2010). ‘Iolanthe’ transferred to Wilton's Music Hall for a sell out season. She has also directed 'Cabaret' and 'Sweeney Todd' (Critics Choice). She was awarded The Stage One Bursary for New Producers by S.O.L.T. Lizzi Gee’s choreography credits include ‘Rocket to the Moon’ at the National, ‘Onassis’ starring Robert Lindsay at the Novello, ‘Vernon God Little’ at the Young Vic. In the West End, Michael England has been Musical Director for ‘Les Misérables’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Spamalot’, ‘The Producers’, and ‘Jerry Springer – The Opera’(also BBC TV).

Alan Richardson is reprising his role as Mabel. He played Phyllis in 'Iolanthe' in Sasha Regan’s production of ‘Iolanthe’. Matthew Gent has recently been in ‘Sweeney Todd’ at the Adelphi and he has also been in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Misérables’. Nic Gibney’s credits include as Frank, Brad and Riff- Raff, in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ and ‘Evita’ European tours. Neal Moors was Captain Von Trapp in the recent UK tour of ‘The Sound of Music’.
