James Conway directs the first ever UK professional tour of Donizetti’s The Siege of Calais, with designs by Samal Blak, inspired by the Siege of Stalingrad. Donizetti’s opera tours alongside ‘Simon Boccanegra’ – ETO’s first new Verdi production in several years – and Paul Higgins’ new period production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte.

Cosἰ Fan Tutte Mozart Saturday 2 and Thurs 7 March 7.30pm

The conductor is James Burton, directed by Paul Higgins, with design by Samal Blak, and lighting by Ace McCarron. Director Paul Higgins has worked on many productions as revival and staff director at the Royal Opera House.

In the cast are Laura Mitchell (Fiordiligi), Kitty Whately (Dorabella) and Paula Sides (Despina), with tenor Anthony Gregory (Ferrando) and Richard Mosley-Evans (Don Alfonso). This new production sung in English. The running time is 2 hours 50 mins. There is a 25 piece orchestra.

Simon Boccanegra Verdi Friday 8 March, 7.30pm

Simon Boccanegra is ETO’s first new Verdi production for several years. The conductor is Michael Rosewell and the director is James Conway with design by Samal Blak, and lighting by Ace McCarron. In the cast are Craig Smith (Simon Boccanegra), Elizabeth Llewellyn (Amelia), Keel Watson (Jacopo Fiesco), Grant Doyle (Paolo Albiani), Charne Rochford (Gabriele Adorno), Piotr Lempa (Pietro).

This is a massive undertaking for English Touring Opera, with an unusually large chorus and orchestra – a personal ambition of ETO General Director James Conway and Music Director Michael Rosewell, supported with a special grant from the Peter Moores Foundation. The production will be peformed in Italian with English surtitles. There will be a 26 piece orchestra. The running time is 2 hours 35 minutes.

The Siege of Calais Donizetti (L’assedio di Calais) Saturday 9 March, 7.30pm

It is conducted by Jeremy Silver, directed by James Conway and designed by Samal Blak, with lighting by Ace McCarron.

In the cast are Paula Sides ( Eleonara, Aurelio’s wife), Helen Sherman (Aurelio, Eustachio’s Son), Eddie Wade (Eustachio, Mayor of Calais), Cozmin Sime (Eduardo III, King of England), Andrew Glover (Giovanni d’Aire, burgher), Brendan Collins (Pietro di Wisants, burgher), Niel Joubert (Giacomo di Wisants, burgher), Adam Tunnicliffe (Edmundo, English General), Matthew Sprange (Armando). The production is performed in Italian with English surtitles. There will be a 26 piece orchestra. The running time is 2 hours 20 minutes.
