In the cast are Gwen Taylor (Millie), Adam Buchanan (Michael/Bertie), Lloyd Notice (Lion, Mr Cook), Christopher Hogben (Basher), Tracey Bargate (Nurse), Sydney Smith (Merlot), Michael Palmer (Bertie’s father) Gina Isaac (Bertie’s mother),and Sam Clark (Merlot's Assistant). The Butterfly Lion is directed by Daniel Buckroyd, Associate/Movement director Matthew Cullum, with design by Juliet Shillingford, puppet maker Sue Pyecroft , music by Carlton Edwards, sound design by Adam McCready and lighting by Mark Dymock. The Butterfly Lion is a Mercury Theatre Made In Colchester production presented by arrangement with Bill Kenwright Ltd. It was originally produced by New Perspectives, Curve Theatre, Leicester & Derby Theatre in 2012.

When the orphaned white lion cub he has rescued from the African Veld is sold to a circus owner and shipped off to Europe, young Bertie vows he will see his friend again. Little does he realise the adventurous, romantic, shocking turns his life will take before that momentous day finally comes.

Gwen Taylor has just filmed ‘The Smiths’, a remake of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ for the BBC with Lee Mack and Catherine Tate. She has also just completed a six month tour of ‘Driving Miss Daisy’. Gwen Taylor’s extensive stage credits include ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Quartet’. TV roles include as Ann Foster in ITV’s ‘Coronation Street’ 2011- 2012 and as Peg in ITV’s‘Heartbeat’ 2004 - 2009. Adam Buchanan (Michael/Bertie) has just won the Alan Bates Bursary Award 2013 from the Guildford School of Acting. Lloyd Notice’s (Lion) roles include as Mufasa in ‘The Lion King’ Lyceum, as Esculus in Josie Rouke’s production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at the Liverpool Playhouse, and the title role in ‘Othello’ in New York in 2005.

Michael Morpurgo’s 1996 Award winning The Butterfly Lion is a tale of enduring friendship by the acclaimed author of ‘War Horse’. Daniel Buckroyd has adapted and directed Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Farm Boy’ the sequel to ‘War Horse’ which had a second UK tour last autumn . It played a sold out season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010 and was also at 59E59 Theaters Brits Off Broadway New York in December 2011. Daniel Buckroyd has also adapted Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Friend or Foe’ which will be revived at the Mercury in Spring 2014. Sue Pyecroft is one of the puppet makers for ‘War Horse’. She created the puppets for Daniel Buckroyd’s production of ‘Dolly’ at the Curve in 2010. Carlton Edwards has been the musical director for ‘Mama Mia’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ in the West End.
