Having triumphed in Australia and the final date of a UK tour, Sasha Regan’s award-winning production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance comes to Hackney in June.

The Pirates of Penzance (1879) was an instant hit and is one of the most popular operettas by W.S Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan.

The story concerns Frederic, who, on reaching 21, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tenderhearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and they fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on February 29, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship states that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Sasha Regan founded The Union Theatre in 1998. Her directing credits include ‘Iolanthe’ (Critics Choice & Time Out's top 10 musicals of 2010). ‘Iolanthe’ transferred to Wilton's Music Hall for a sell out season. She has also directed 'Cabaret' and 'Sweeney Todd' (Critics Choice). She was awarded The Stage One Bursary for New Producers by S.O.L.T.

Lizzi Gee’s choreography credits include 'Pride' the Award winning film directed by Matthew Warchus, ‘Rocket to the Moon’ at the National, ‘Onassis’ starring Robert Lindsay, ‘Vernon God Little’ at the Young Vic. Michael England has been Musical Director for ‘Les Misérables’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Spamalot’, ‘The Producers’, and ‘Jerry Springer – The Opera’(also BBC TV).
