Stony Broke in No Man’s Land

Finborough Theatre, 118 Finborough Rd, SW10 9ED

A new play written and directed by acclaimed playwright John Burrows, returns to The Finborough Theatre for a season from Sun 10 Jan to Tuesday 26 January 2016. The cast are David Brett and Gareth Willams, two of the original members of ‘The Flying Pickets’, No 1 chart topping band with Number One hit, ‘Only You’.

Dressed in shabby great coats with medals pinned to their chests, two jobless ex-Tommies busking on a London street, tell in words, song and music the story of Percy Cotton a young soldier and the love of his life Nellie Mottram, a bogus spiritualist.

Stony Broke in No Man’s Land is set in Woolwich in 1916, the battlefields of France, the grand squares of Mayfair, Parliament and state funeral in 1920 for The Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey … the funeral that might just have never happened without them.

David Brett’s extensive credits include 'Stanley Spencer: A Painter' in Heaven for the Stanley Spencer Gallery and Dedalus Diggle in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ plus seasons with the Young Vic, Oxford Stage Company and Arcola. Gareth Williams credits include ‘Waiting for Godot’ with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart Australian tour, UK tour of ‘My Fair Lady and BBC TV ‘Silk’ with Maxine Peake and Rupert Penry Jones and US TV series ‘Law and Order’.

Stony Broke in No Man’s Land reunites John Burrows with David Brett and Gareth Williams who were in One Big Blow, the highly successful play about coal miners and their brass band that John Burrows wrote for 7.84 Theatre. This spawned the a cappella group, The Flying Pickets.

John Burrows’ Award winning musical ‘Viva España’ was seen in Edinburgh and at the Arts Theatre in 1993. The choreographer was Bruno Tonioli. His most well known production (with John Harding) is ‘The Golden Pathway Annual’ which was at the Crucible Sheffield prior to a season at the May Fair Theatre. It continues to be performed worldwide.

Stony Broke in No Man’s Land is presented by Vertical Man Productions in association with Neil McPherson for The Finborough Theatre.
