Mark Quartley will play Private Tommo. Private Peaceful is adapted and directed by Simon Reade, associate director is Mark Leipacher, design is by Bill Talbot, lighting by Wayne Dowdeswell, sound by Jason Barnes and costumes by Ronnie Dorsey. It is produced by Scamp Theatre & Poonamallee Productions.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Mark Quartley played Lysander in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Bankside and in a UK and European tour earlier this year. In his final production at RADA this summer he played the Duke in Jonathan Miller’s production of ‘Measure For Measure’.

Private Peaceful is adapted and directed for the stage by Simon Reade. His previous adaptations include Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Toro! Toro!’ and ‘The Mozart Question’, ‘Tales from Ovid’ by Ted Hughes and Salman Rushdie’s ‘Midnight’s Children’ both for the RSC and Philip Pullman’s ‘The Scarecrow and His Servant’. He has directed and co-written the feature film ‘What You Will’.

Poonamallee Productions are developing the film version of Private Peaceful.

The inspiration for Private Peaceful came from Michael Morpurgo’s visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Scamp Theatre have just co- produced the sell out season of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Farm Boy’ Edinburgh Festival and UK tour. The Award winning National Theatre production of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’ continues to play to packed houses at the New London and the Steven Spielberg film version will be released in September 2011.
