The original production of STARLIGHT EXPRESS will give its final performance at London’s APOLLO VICTORIA Theatre on 12th January 2002

STARLIGHT EXPRESS opened at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre on 27 March 1984 and will give its final performances on Saturday 12 January 2002.

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, STARLIGHT EXPRESS will by then have given 7,406 performances, have been seen by over 8,000,000 people and have taken over £140 million at the London Box Office.

Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, producers of the show, have plans for a national tour of STARLIGHT EXPRESS in a purpose built environment and an animated television series based on the musical. Plans are also well developed for a stadium production of the show in other territories.

Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “STARLIGHT EXPRESS has had an amazing run. It is a show very dear to my heart as I wrote it for my older children, now 24 and 22, and I want to turn it into something much younger children will enjoy. Its final performance will be a very emotional experience for all of us who have been close to it for the past 18 years. I have long wanted to see STARLIGHT presented in Britain in a purpose built environment as we have in Germany. STARLIGHT’S closure in London provides the perfect opportunity to plan whilst freeing up the theatre for my production of the musical ‘Bombay Dreams’.

12th January 2002 will be a chance for us to celebrate STARLIGHT in its original London home safe in the knowledge that as we say goodbye to it here, plans are well developed for its future life elsewhere. I look forward to introducing it to new audiences and to new generations of theatregoers.”

STARLIGHT EXPRESS is directed by Trevor Nunn and designed by John Napier with choreography by Arelene Phillips. It is the second longest running musical in West End history after Lloyd Webber’s CATS which will celebrate its 21st birthday when it gives its 8,955th performance at the New London Theatre on 11 May 2002.

Unique amongst stage musicals, STARLIGHT EXPRESS set the West End alight at its opening with its use of state of the art technology, its roller-skating cast and its vast set wrapping around and through the audience. As it has been updated through the years, STARLIGHT is even now the most technologically advanced show in the West End.

STARLIGHT continues a record-breaking run in its purpose-built theatre in Bochum, Germany, where it has recently given its 5,486th performance having opened on 7 June 1988. It has taken over £450 million at the box office across the world having also played on Broadway, on tour in the USA and Canada, and in Germany, Japan, Australia and Mexico.
