Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Leon Williams has just been in the RSC ‘The Bullet’ and as Demetrius in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the Globe and European tour. Private Peaceful is adapted and directed for the stage by Simon Reade. The BBC Radio 4 recording will be transmitted in December. His previous adaptations include Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Toro! Toro!’ and ‘The Mozart Question’, ‘Tales from Ovid’ by Ted Hughes and Salman Rushdie’s ‘Midnight’s Children’ both for the RSC and Philip Pullman’s ‘The Scarecrow and His Servant’.

The inspiration for Private Peaceful came from Michael Morpurgo’s visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Scamp Theatre co- produced the sell out season of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Farm Boy’ Edinburgh Festival and UK tour. The Award winning National Theatre production of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’ continues to play to packed houses at the New London. Steven Spielberg film version will be released in December 2011. Scamp Theatre are producing Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Friend or Foe’ commencing at Watford Palace from 30 September 2011 and then onto a UK Tour.
