This new production will be at the Arts Theatre for a 5 week Christmas Season from Thursday 8 December to Saturday 14 January 2012. The press performances will be at 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 10 December.

Simon Callow is renowned for his representation of Charles Dickens and here he takes on the classic Christmas tale. ‘A Christmas Carol’ is directed and designed by Tom Cairns, with sound by Ben and Max Ringham and lighting by Andreas Fuchs. It will be produced by Assembly and Riverside Studios.

‘A Christmas Carol’ is the most famous book Charles Dickens ever wrote and one of the most daring. As the Ghosts spirit Scrooge from his past to his present to his future, Dickens plunges the reader cinematically from the miser's dank and creaking house in the City to riotous festivities, from cosy hearths to graveyards. And all the time the author's voice, tender, savage, magisterial, is present.

Taking the author's own performing version as a starting point, Simon Callow and Tom Cairns have created a work of total story-telling: phantasmagorical, hilarious, heart-breaking, visionary - a celebration of goodness, a plea for justice and a promise of redemption.

Simon Callow is currently touring Charles Dickens’ ‘Dr Marigold and Mr Chops’ and he was in a sell-out season of ‘Tuesdays at Tescos’ at the Assembly Hall at this year’s Edinburgh Festival. He has written 12 books. ‘My Life in Pieces’, an alternative autobiography, is currently in paperback. His biography, ‘Charles Dickens and The Great Theatre of the World’, will be published by Harper Collins on 7 February 2012, the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth.

Tom Cairns directed and designed ‘Being Shakespeare’ for Simon Callow at the Edinburgh Festival 2010, an extensive UK tour and the Trafalgar Studios, and which will be at B.A.M. New York next April and US tour. Tom Cairns received an Olivier Award for his design for the Thomas Adès production of ‘The Tempest’ at the Royal Opera House. Ben and Max Ringham’s credits include the sound and music for Stephen Poliakoff’s ‘My City’ at the Almeida, ‘The Painkiller’ at the Lyric Belfast with Kenneth Branagh and Rob Brydon and for ‘Inadmissable Evidence’ currently at the Donmar. Andreas Fuchs has been the lighting designer for Robert Wilson productions worldwide since 1992. He has also designed lighting for architects and artists including Daniel Libeskind and Rebecca Horn.
