a new play commissioned by New Perspectives Theatre Company and Derby Live will be at the Guildhall Derby from Friday 16 March to Saturday 31 March 2012, followed by an eight week rural tour to Sunday 27 May. The press performance will be on Tuesday 20 March at 7.00pm.

In the cast are Tyrone Huggins (The Honey Man) and Esther Smith (Misty). It is directed by Suzanne Gorman with design by Juliet Shillingford, lighting by Jeremy Rowe and sound by Adam McCready. Howard Saddler has withdrawn from portraying The Honey Man.

'How can I remember things I never knew?' The Honey Man is about an unlikely relationship that develops one summer between Misty, a 15 year-old girl, and The Honey Man, an 'ancient' Afro-Caribbean man who has taken up residence in a derelict cottage at the edge of an English village where she lives. It's a tale of growing up and growing old, of individual responsibility and shared history, of dying bees, healing herbs and (possibly) just a little magic.

Tyrone Huggins has performed in over 70 productions in the UK, including plays by David Hare at the National Theatre, and with the RSC and Glasgow Citizens Theatre. He took the title role in Wole Soyinka’s ‘The Beautification of Area Boy’ directed by Jude Kelly. Tyrone has written 9 commissioned plays for, among others, the Octagon Bolton, Contact Manchester and BBC Radio 4. His work has been published by Oberon Books.

Esther Smith was in ‘The Author’ by Tim Crouch at the Traverse 2010 and in ‘Carrot’ written by Ben Ockrent for Theatre 503 at Latitude 2011. She appeared in Channel 4’s ‘Misfits’ with Robert Sheehan and the BBC series ‘Material Girl’ with Dervla Kirwin.

Suzanne Gorman is the Connect Director at Soho Theatre. Her work there includes ‘Bagpuss’, ‘Tales of the Harrow Road’, ‘The Weave’, ‘3 Days in July’. She has directed for Shared Experience, Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Royal Stratford East. Juliet Shillingford has worked extensively for New Perspectives Theatre Company.

The Honey Man was developed in partnership with Eastern Angles Theatre Company and Theatre Writing Partnership and showcased as a work-in-progress at the ACE Decibel 2009 Festival.
