The culmination of the centenary of the birth of the John Betjeman Poet Laureate is a Gala performance to celebrate his life and work.

It has been announced today that HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will attend the Gala.

Barry Humphries will host this evening of variety, music and dance. The following will take part subject to availability:

Band British Sea Power, Suggs , Nick Cave, Jools Holland, Bill Nighy, Hugh Grant, Ronnie Corbett and his wife Anne Hart, Rachael Stirling, Joanna Lumley, Kit and the Widow, Edward Fox, Prunella Scales, Jonathan Cecil, Kenneth Cranham, Miriam Margolyes, Sinead Cusack, Timothy West, Joanna David, Stephen Fry, the Bishop of London, St Paul’ s Church Choir. There will be a special video link to Dame Edna Everage from Australia.

The evening is directed by Joe Harmston. This year’s centenary events have been organised by John Betjeman’s daughter, Candida Lycett Green. She has edited her father’s collected letter to be published in August. Her books include ‘The Garden At Highgrove’.

John Betjeman (1906 – 1984) became the most popular and best loved British poet of the late twentieth century and became an institution. During August there will be three films on BBC 2, a special documentary on BBC Radio 2 and dedicated programming across BBC Radio 4. There will be a wreath laying ceremony at Poet’s Corner, Westminster Abbey on Monday 28 August, John Betjeman’s birthday and a Cornish Birthday Party.
