Othello will be presented by the Ludlow Festival Society in the ruins of Ludlow Castle.

Othello, the most formally constructed of all Shakespeare’s great plays, and with some of his finest poetry, is a tragic tale of love and betrayal in a time of war, as the commanding officer Othello, besotted with his new bride, Desdemona, is enmeshed in a plot of deception by his scheming lieutenant, Iago: “Perdition catch my soul, but I do love thee! And when I love thee not, Chaos is come again.”

The director is Ben Crocker, the designer Philip Whitcomb and musical director Thomas Johnson; with lighting by John Tapster, sound by Ian Horrocks-Taylor, and fights arranged by Paul Benzing. This production will be set in the 1850s Crimean War.

In the cast are Christopher Obi (Othello), Michael Mueller (Iago), Emily Pennant-Rea (Desdemona), Damien Matthews (Cassio), Charlie Walker–Wise (Roderigo), Zara Ramm (Emilia), Sophie Scott (Bianca), with Jeff Harmer, Billy Riddoch, William Oxborrow, Harry Napier.

Christopher Obi has just finished filming John Landis’s ‘Burke and Hare’. He has been in many RSC productions, including Antony Sher’s ‘Breakfast With Mugabe’ and Michael Boyd’s ‘Twelfth Night’. In 2009, he wrote and directed ‘Perfect’ starring Gemma Arterton and Charlie Cox.

Michael Mueller’s most recent TV credits include ‘Spooks’ and ‘Wallander’. He has appeared with the RSC, National and Royal Court.

Emily Pennant-Rea recently appeared in ‘The Entertainer’ at Lichfield, ‘Les Enfants Du Paradis’ at the Arcola, and ‘Charley’s Aunt’ at the Theatre Royal Bath and on tour directed by Mel Smith.

Sophie Scott has recently been seen in Peter Hall’s production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the Rose Kingston. She also appeared in ‘Twelfth Night’ directed by Michael Grandage at Wyndham’s Theatre.

Ben Crocker was Artistic Director of Exeter Northcott for 10 years until 2008. Philip Whitcomb has designed ‘Richard III’, ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘Macbeth’ with Ben Crocker. He has recently designed ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘The Tempest’ at Regents Park Open Air Theatre. He is designing ‘Kiss of the Spiderwoman’ at Northampton this summer. Thomas Johnson has composed for many theatre companies including the National and the Ludlow Festival.
